This, is most definitely not like riding a bike. I am not sure that I even remember how to <strike>wright </strike>r<strike>ight</strike> write, but that would imply that I "knew" how in the first place. I might try to recall what I have been doing for the past three, four, five years here in the next few weeks/months, or I will just post pictures. Who knows what is going to happen. I would say "stay tuned" but not sure if there will be anything in the future to tune into. I've made promises in the past that fell flat.
So. I will start where I find myself today. Jan 24th. I am on the island of O'ahu, yes that is Hawaii. I know, I know, don't feel bad for me. I am here for the next short/long foreseeable future. There is good and there is bad. This is a very tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I could reveal what is behind the curtain and tell the dark side to living in a "paradise" or I can stay in the light and be positive. You might get a little of both. We will see.
As you can see from the pictures, it's not a bad place to look at, which it is very easy on the eyes. The weather is a perfect winter. Just imagine your perfect weather, yep that is what I deal with on a daily. Poor me. It does rain, but it is not bad, it's still warm even in a downpour.
Road riding is good here, it's no Scotland -Maybe I will get to the time I spent there... There is some MTB trials just a few miles from The Bike Shop, where I steal their super nice bikes. That is the name of the shop, hence the capitalization. I only brought over my road bike and my cross bike. The road bike is in my living room, and the cross has seen the lion's share of the riding. The roads are pretty brutal, and there is some pseudo off road that favors the CX bike, AND I have to lock it up in the parking garage. NO BIKES IN THE ELEVATOR -Haters gonna hate. The Rust is real, it is a daily fight the red menace.
I had the privilege to travel to Poland for two months this summer. I took my bike so that I would not turn into a raving idiotic lunatic. Needless to say, I was able to ride more days than not. Here are some pictures of the Polish roads that I became friends with...
The area of Poland that I stayed had every imaginable type of road surface, I rode my cross bike fitted with Challenge Paris Roubaix 27s. They measure out to just at 29mm, and they are at home in the dirt, gravel, pavement, and pave. They were great because the roads ranged from buttery smooth to bombed out broken asphalt and everything in between.
Some of them have provided, some were absent, and some are gone. These men that we call Dad, Father, Pops, Popi, Sir, are the framework for what we as young men are supposed to be when we grow up. Some good some bad. I was lucky and have a Dad that is a Man among men. I haven't been able to follow in his footsteps, but knowing him has shaped my life more than I really wanted.

In my rebellious teens I did not want to have anything to do with my Dad. I had to work with him, and it wasn't easy. Don't get me wrong, I had a very good life growing up, provided for to the point of being spoiled. Yeah I was/am spoiled. That is the type of man my Dad is. Hard worker, but even harder player.

Then I moved away and was without my Dad. Every job I got was easy, because of the work I did with my Dad it was a breeze. The more I thought about not being like my Day the more I thought about being like him, I realized that I could never be my Dad.

I can never be like my Dad. He has done things that I hope to do, and he has had to do things that I never want to do. My Dad has provided. He helped raise my sister and me, buried a child and both parents, been successful as a businessman in one of the toughest jobs. I could never do these things as well.

My Dad has been there for me throughout my life, success or not, he has always been a constant. I realize I can never be my Dad, and I just want to make him proud. Don't know if there is much of anything I have done to make him proud, but he still loves me because I am his son, and I guess that is what being a Dad is all about.

Happy Father's Day Dad. You have given me the world when I did not deserve it, you were there when I didn't want you, and you are there when I need you. I can never thank you enough for you being you.

I love you.
I got to go to France. And. I took a bike, my bike. How cool is that? Sounds like bragging, I'm pretty sure it is, but how freaking awesome is that? I'm still in disbelief of the whole thing. France. Well, to be more accurate Northern France in the Normandy and Picardie regions. Right on the Channel (or left depending on which way you are standing). I went to Europe last fall and it was awesome (bragging again). I'm not going to say BUT. (but)This time was different because I took my bike, and we stayed in the same place for a week and a half before moving on to Paris and Bruxelles.

I was on my own to explore wherever my legs could take me. I have to say this is the only way to see a new place, whether it be a foreign country or your own neighborhood. The bike is just fast enough that you can go places, but slow enough that you don't miss out on the nuances. I can say that I made a connection with the places I went on bike. The memories seem more tactile. You see, feel, hear and smell the experience. It's sensory usage that imprints greater because more senses are being recorded at the same time. Towns and villages have more character that one can feel by slowing down. The smells of the agriculture, bakeries, fish markets, and the sea are enhanced by the sound and sights that envelop a place.
I could go on and on, actually I can't. So, I'll let these pictures pile up the thousands and thousands of words. Yes, it was that beautiful, even on the rainy days. Yes, I did imagine riding shoulder to shoulder with the pro peloton, when in France these things happen. I didn't actually get to ride shoulder to shoulder with the pros, but I did see the end of the Tour of Picardie. I did ride next to and behind the pros as they were heading back to the buses. Je t'aime, France, merci

Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-520167312065179912015-05-03T21:43:00.000-05:002015-05-03T21:43:38.090-05:00How's it going?I commute to work every now and then, I'm not a have-to commuter, I'm a want-to commuter, and I want to more than not. In this metropolius of pick-up trucks I am one of a handful of people that actually ride bikes to work in this unfriendly, no infrastructure, take your life in your own hands country. On my commute to work I expect to be honked at, buzzed, yelled at (when one yells out of a car window at 70+mph one sounds even more ignorant than if I could even understand what you are trying to convey). Don't yell it makes one seem stupid.

I never see other cyclists on my commute. Never. Well, in the year that I have been doing this maybe a handful. So you can see that I was delighted to see another cyclist on the road on my way to work this morning. Speeding up to catch said rider is my usual response, but not today. I stayed the course and gradually reeled him in. Wow! Another cyclist out on the same road enjoying the same weather and a beautiful tailwind. I was ready for a chat, a cyclist to cyclist chat.

I slowed slightly to meet his pace, edged up beside him and announced my presence with a friendly "how's it going?" He barely half-looked in my direction and kept riding. So I followed that up with a "you doin' alright?" which was completely ignored with a blank-leave-me-alone-stare. No glance, no nod, nothing. Well well, guess all the "Riders" in these parts are too PRO to have a little cycling banter on the Sunday morning spin out.

I expect rudeness from the automobile clad legions, but a fellow cyclist? Really? I know there are the stereotypical jackasses in cycling. I know this. But here in this tiny cycling community where a group ride has less people than a training ride with my old cycling club? With so few people can one really afford to be such an ass? Hope that works out for you buddy.

Ignorance comes in the four-wheeled variety and it also is prevalent on two wheels. Yes I come away from this incident a little sad that I could not share an experience, the experience of riding a bike, with a fellow cyclist and possibly meet someone new. I should know better and not have my feelings hurt, but it just seems that we are all in this together and we should be on the same team. The next time I roll up on another cyclist, if it ever happens again, I will be sure to give at least a nod, but more importantly, a "how's it going?"Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-45292725897391726062015-04-25T23:38:00.000-05:002015-04-25T23:38:44.258-05:00dumb rage pt.2It has been several hours since part one, and I still have the rage glowing inside me like a spicy taco truck burrito. I am still amazed by the ignorance of people, people who are supposed to be in our tribe, think the way we do, live the way we do, but then again every family has that crazy uncle who drinks too much, talks too much, and is well you get the point. My rage digresses into sadness.

(fade to black and white grainy backdrop) I've been riding mountain bikes for almost 17 years, I started back in Utah in the summer because I was getting fat and it took forever when the snow came to get into riding form. Bikes were not my first love, and I just used them as a tool. They did not become my life until about ten years ago. I'm not providing my background in cycling to prove that I "know stuff", it is to show that I don't know everything there is to know. I am a student of cycling and I have a lifetime to learn. My knowledge is only a small sliver. What I do know is this. (house lights come up with a small rainbow and unicorn -stage left)

Mountain bike trails don't make themselves, there is not some magical all seeing being that comes down from Unicorn Rainbow Land to breathe trails to life. I wish. But. For me this is really kinda how it happens. Trails just appear. It is a miracle. I go to the Trail Head ride my bike and go home. Done and dusted, time for a man soda. Wait. I know what you are thinking, you don't believe in Unicorn Rainbow trail making god?

First Santa and now Unicorn Trail Making god. I found out the other day that people make trails. Who knew? Yes, real people just like you and me. Well, except they spend countless hours working, building, breaking, sawing, sweating, cutting, moving for the common good of ALL trail users. Not just mountain bikers you silly. Everyone. It's like going to your job doing all the work and then someone else gets your paycheck to spend on beer and candy. Show some appreciation, say thank you, respect what you have -what you have been given. Find these <strike>magical</strike> real people and buy them a beer, or probably the best thing you could do, is help. Or, just say thank you and stop your complaining, after all you are big, though, awesome, PRO, mountain bikers.

Thank you for all your hard work. MY trails are awesome. That's right I own them. (last two sentences dripping with sarcasm)Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-66663432194469225662015-04-25T08:35:00.000-05:002015-04-25T08:35:34.139-05:00Dumb RageThis is probably a bad idea, but I'm pissed. I have to put something down to maybe, just maybe work through this seething rage of hatred. I hate ignorance. Ignorance that has no merit but is embolden by years of just not having a freaking clue. Throwing a leg over a mountain bike does not magically make you a mountainbiker, but for some it does, and with this it gives one knowledge beyond all comprehension. Trolling the interwebs, mags, and edits makes one so PRO. Please oh great ones let us know how awesome you are, we seek your wisdom.

Riding a trail or hiking or rolling around in the dust for 30+ years does not prescribe ownership. Taking your sick whip out of your padded tailgate truck for the first time does not entitle you to ownership.

KNOWLEDGE DROP: NO one OWNS the trails, we are all users. The only people who OWN trails are the ones that have Title or Deed to the land, then and only then does someone OWN the trail.

I have never wielded a rake, shovel, sledgehammer, weed-eater, or put on work gloves for trail building/maintenance. I am a consumer, and everyone who does the same as I, is a consumer. If you are not working on the trails in some capacity this is what you are. Unlike Burger King, being a trail consumer, we can NOT Have It Our Way. We have to consume the trail the way it is presented to us.

End of story.

More to come on this subject, I am by no means finished with this RANT, I'm pissed.

What does it mean? To be strong? A show of strength, is that being strong? The opposite of Strength is Weakness, so Weakness is the opposite of Strength? Right? "I bench 4000lbs" (yeah I put an extra 0 in there to see if you were paying attention) Is the true show of strength muscle bound apes lifting heavy things and then putting them back down again?

I don't know what it "means" to be strong, what I do know is there are people who are stronger than I. I'm not talking about lifting heavy stuff, or being faster, or whatever your measuring stick might be. I am talking about fortitude, the kind of stuff that real people are made from. Forged if you will. Forged out of stone. The aunt that is fighting cancer, the cousins that lost an adult son, the family friends that lost a father and husband. That is true strength, the kind that gets one out of bed in the morning when there is no reason to get up. The power to look another day in the face and hope that you have another one tomorrow. I know nothing of this strength, I marvel at these people in my life and I question. How do they do it? Strength. Where does it come from? If I ever need this kind of strength will I find it?

In our daily lives we get too caught up in the small stuff, we forget the big picture and focus on the unnecessary. It's too easy to care about stupid things and forget what is real. Reality is not always unicorns, rainbows, and sharks with lasers. It is pain, suffering, dark and cold, and it takes strength to live.

Getting up when you have been knocked down is Strong. Trying to get up when you can't is Strength.Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-36921799224298400652014-07-13T12:34:00.000-05:002014-07-13T12:34:13.009-05:00SinnerRiding in a group is "herd mentality" we follow the leader and we don't want to be left behind. There is strength in numbers and nobody wants to be left on their own. Plus, misery loves company, and we all know that riding into a punishing headwind is no fun. Especially when you are doing it alone knowing that your "friends" or "that group" is just up the road. Unwilling to wait or stop just for a min or two. Jackasses.

I abhor this. I believe in "no Man left behind". I will double back to help out a rider in trouble, offer a helping hand, water, gels, companionship. I have <strike>always, </strike> well since I was strong enough to be a "Shepard", tried to help riders in trouble. I have been in that place before, you know the one where you are getting dropped and you can no longer hang onto the wheel in front of you. Alarm bells going off, legs feeling hollow, lights dimming, we have all been there, it's a lonely place. I know, I lived there for years and when I used to ride with the boys in Tulsa. Those guys are horribly fast, and tough.

Yesterday I committed a cardinal sin. I left a rider behind. Worse yet, I said that I would not do it. Promised. I did the very thing that I can not stand other riders doing. I am the worst kind of hypocrite. I have preached against the very act that I would never condone, but yet became an offender of my own convictions.

The only question I have of myself is Why? Why would I do such a thing? I have no excuse, I have no answer. All I can say is that I was so in the "red" that I did not know what I was doing. Race Brain. That sounds like the best excuse I can come up with. But. And this is a big But. I really think that it was ego. I was afraid to show weakness in the herd. I did not want anyone to "think" that I was not as awesome as I see myself. I did not want to be perceived as "not fast, not good, not awesome, not a racer". It's because I care about what people think about me. Crap.

I don't have anything to prove to anyone but myself, but my ego got the best of me and I felt like I needed to prove something to the herd. I don't need to prove anything to the herd, I needed to be bigger than my ego and help a fellow cyclist. I failed me. I failed my view of what it means to be a cyclist. I failed my fellow man.

I feel shame, and I am sorry. I know better.Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-15689875366409557922014-07-07T22:29:00.000-05:002014-07-07T22:29:09.196-05:00Stage 2 TdF 2014Wow, looked like a Classic today, over 200k and hilly or should I say climb(y). Rough day none the less.
Cav is out, suffering at his own hands in a stage 1 sprint, glad everyone else was okay enough to continue on today. Two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time, especially two objects that are moving 60+ kph. The pure sprinters did not get to have a go today due to the nature of the par course and Kittel handed over the Yellow to Nibali. Ah le Tour how we all adore you. I know it is not Spring, but I love seeing Greg Van Avermaet mixing it up in a stage of le Tour that was akin to L-B-L.

I hope to see a lot more of Michal Kwiatkowski "flower man" this Tour, not sure if he has the legs for the whole month, but he looks good and I would love to make him my pick. Can't rule out Wiggins, oops Sky didn't bring Wiggo, so I mean Froome, Contador, after today Nibali looks like a contender. There are others that I am overlooking, but it is a long race. Great to see Horner back on the bike and in the biggest race of the year, just a few months ago no one would have guessed he would be here.

O to the M to the Gosh, did I see Frank Schleck and Andy? And they both finished a race? I would love to see a "healthy" Frank and Andy Tour. And by "healthy" I mean whatever they were on or not on just a few Tours ago. Now that would be a huge darkhorse if Frank or Andy could be a contender this year. Choke artist Joaquim Rodriquez could and should be a threat as should Valverde and Costa. I am a Lotto Belisol fan and love my man Adam Hansen the super domestique and would like to see Van Den Broeck challenge for a top spot.

And now for a little flag waving. One word. Andrew Talansky. How awesome would it be if Talansky kicked some @s$ this Tour? It's possible. Ted King, not a contender but awesome to see him in his second Tour, hope it lasts longer than last year (stupid UCI not letting him stay after missing the timecut). Always a favorite, and with Cadel Evans out Tejay Van Garderen could actually get the support he needs to make an impact in France. A name that we should hear pronounced wrongly is Busche. Matt Busche. Never heard of him? Well hope to hear a lot more from him in the next couple of weeks.Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-2755462056694503212014-07-02T09:03:00.000-05:002014-07-02T09:03:55.279-05:00Same is not the SameIt's World Cup time, I'm not talking about Road World Champs, World Cup as in Futball or as we like to call it Soccer. The US was just eliminated by Belgium, it was a sad day, any other day and I'm OK with getting mopped up by the Belgians (cyclocross), but soccer. We actually had a chance, it's not their game, it's the World's game. They (Belgians) own cyclocross as the Canadians own Hockey, but soccer we were on a somewhat level playing field. Pun intended. I digress. The Dutch are going all the way, or Germany, or maybe even Belgium. Stay tuned.

I'm not a huge soccer fan, but I will watch it and converse about what is going on in the world of futball. It is a fringe sport here in the States as is Cycling. So. Being a cycling fan you should be able to empathize with the soccer hooligan. We are the same, but different. The <strike>World</strike> US sees us as weird when we ride bikes or kick a ball. I would like to think that this is out of ignorance. Mostly. Maybe I should not use such strong language, but it is a lack of knowledge that makes people fear something. Something beautiful such as cycling or futball. I don't play soccer, but I appreciate what the players can do with the ball. Magic, and all the running.

Yes there is an ugly side to both sports, the diving, the drugs, the biting, and all the lying. That is the human side to any pursuit, that is what we do. Hate it for what it is, not for what it is a part. I choose to see the beauty in my sport, I know there is a fresh body in the closet waiting to become a skeleton, but I still have the love. The positives outweigh the negatives. Le Tour starts this weekend and the World will be watching Futball and The Grand Depart, and a small slice of the globe will be driving their petrol burning over-sized death machines to the lake with no thought to either. Hating something because you don't understand is ignorance. Ignorance is bliss, and there are happy people everywhere.
That will make me hardcore.

Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1, this was a far cry from what the bicycle mechanics flew at Kill Devil Hills. Was it easier for Chuck to pilot the X-1 than the brother's Wright Flyer? Did innovation make Chuck less of a pilot, or any less skillful than his predecessors? Does Chuck have less street cred because he didn't fly a "real" airplane? Can this argument be made for either side of the technology debate?

"It takes more skill to ride a singlespeed steel bike. Riding a full suspension bike is easier and makes you less of a bike rider." These are valid statements, and the Amish drive horse-drawn carriages, build houses and barns the old fashioned way. They are so much cooler than us electricity using, iPhone talking, internet living crowd. They are so core. Is that why the Paleo (caveman) diet is so hot right now? It's hardcore that's what the neanderthals did, that's what we should do. Old is new is old is new again. Hey, I've got a great idea. Runners should run without shoes, because that's what they did back-in-the-day and they were so cool, and it is harder. If you run in shoes you are not as skillful as someone without.

Is it cheating to use innovation to progress? Does it make you "more of a man" if you choose to eschew technology? Aerodynamic bikes make riders faster, is this wrong? Why would you not want a mechanical advantage? Yes, I understand simplicity. KISS. Barebones get the job done no flash. It works, why do you need anything else? There is something beautiful about simple. It is clean. Easy. Reliable.

We have opposable thumbs which allows us (humans) to use tools. Tools allow us to progress, and throughout history that is exactly what we have done. And we are still doing to this day. Progress is almost as inevitable as death and taxes. Yes you have the choice to be a luddite and stick to your convictions, that is your right. You also have the choice to use every means necessary to propel yourself into the future.Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-17926654661683593592014-06-12T08:21:00.001-05:002014-06-12T15:38:31.828-05:00It's not you, it's me (an open letter to Strava)Dear Strava,

Let me say that before I met you, I had heard about you from our friends, and I wanted to meet you. You seemed too good to be true and I had to find out for myself. Everything I had heard made me excited to get to know you. When we met it was magical. Love at first sight. You were good for me. You encouraged me to ride my bike. After a ride you would brag to everyone and you made me feel like a king. I was a King I was King of your Mountains. The sex was amazing. My friends and people I didn't know were giving me kudos. I was on top of the world. You put me on top of leaderboards with people I knew and total strangers. We were a team, I was your champion and you my cheerleader.

Then you started to withhold things from me, and wanted me to pay for "it". This should have been a red flag, but I was so into you, and you were great for me. Then you started talking about other guys and how good they were. This was rough at first but it motivated me to do better to be better for you to win for you. Then you started telling me that other guys were your King, and this truly hurt me to the core, but I found motivation out of it and worked harder. This is where it all went wrong. It's not you, I got weird, I started acting different. I would go for a nice ride and I would only think about you and what you would think and all of the other guys in your life. It made me angry it turned me into a Strav-A-hole.

My darkest days were in the saddle riding with the taste of blood in my mouth -just to prove my love to you. I had enslaved myself to your opinion of me and of the others. I no longer rode my bike for me. I had you in the back of my mind telling me that someone was better and they were your King, not me. I was crushed and I rode with a black heart, my passion was no longer pure. Rage flowed through my veins and clouded my peace and serenity. The love was gone. I became a monster, a slave, an idiot to an ideal that I could not achieve.

We had some great times, some crazy times, and I do love you, but I am not me. Not the me that I need to be. I wish I was a stronger person and could handle your lifestyle, but I am not, and I do not like the person I have become when I was with you. I have to leave you so that I can re-find myself.

With love,
Glenn-Duh

P.S. I have all your stuff in a box, just text me when you can come pick it up, and can I have my key back?Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-12296843939587780162014-06-09T22:01:00.001-05:002014-06-09T22:01:59.343-05:00Here is what you should thinkNow that we are on the subject of opinions, let me give you yours. Seriously, media (especially marketing) is the Devil. He wants your soul, I mean money, he does it with glossy ads in mags, videos on Youtube, and "PROs" who have already sold their soul to the highest bidder (paycheck). He tells you what to think, what to buy, what to ride, and then you become part of the zombie squads with no thought given. Don't get me wrong marketing is a great means for us consumers to gain knowledge in the form of information, but one has to realize that the information that the Devil gives is always great. Nothing is ever Substandard, Partially, or Marginal. It is always Improved, the Best, Better, Newer, Faster, Lighter, Stronger, but most importantly Newer and ready for you to buy.

Sorry but that was my segue into my actual thought about innovation and technology. I am constantly arguing with co-workers and other cyclists about innovation and technology. First, no matter what side of the fence one is on, there will always be progression in the sport of Cycling. Cycling as a sport is race driven, as long as people saddle up and try to go faster than the next guy, this will happen. It is inevitable don't fight it. I am all for the technological progression of Cycling, but in the same sentence I must state that I also love the history and the beauty of the bicycle.

This is the paradox that I live. I am thrilled to see exotic materials and bikes that look like Star Trek props, but I also dig sexy lugged steel frames welded by someone my Dad's age. So where does one draw the line? How can one maintain heritage but embrace the electronic age of robots making gear selections inside my rear derailleur? Oh so torn. When Tullio Campagnolo invented the derailleur did cyclist at the time scoff his newfangled tech, or did they welcome it with open arms and applaud the ability to change gears without removing the rear wheel?

I am not a fan of electronic shifting, but it is technology, it is the future: and it is, to be honest, really cool. So, do I like it? I don't know. Do I need a 2x11? NO. Do I want a 2x11, sure. But, only if I don't have to buy a new freehub body, and well a whole new grouppo. Well, I guess for now I am stuck in the 2x10 world. Poor me. And yes, I know that 9spd is enough just as 8 was enough. We as humans will always want bigger better, faster stronger. As I type this I can't help but think about "gear heads" and how they have their classic cars. We as cyclists are no different, we may ride the fuel injected computer controlled showroom floor beauty but we lust after the fire breathing supercharged classic muscle from years past.

Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-78074824506247431412014-06-09T09:28:00.000-05:002014-06-09T09:28:11.678-05:00Ignorance and opinions are likeCrazy uncles, everybody has one, but that doesn't mean that you should always talk about him. He's crazy and he is an @s$. Seriously, Cycling is full of Crazy Uncles. Everyone has an opinion about everything. If it has a brand name, color, a size, design, materiel then someone/everyone has something to say about it. Right or Wrong, intelligent or otherwise, everyone is their own self-appointed expert and they want to tell everyone what they know. "Don't use product X, it is dumb, because I am the King of products and I deem it as such."

Can of worms each of which opens another can chock full of other worms that have their own can of worms. Wheel size, in the mountain biking world, can illicit long conversations/arguments that will end up with name calling, hair pulling, crying, and a whole lot of duchebaggery. If you are looking for a good fist fight -try it. Just make sure to stick to your guns and don't listen to anything that the other opinionated has to say, 'cause they will not be listening to what you have to say. You want to know what I think about wheel size... Yeah I bet you do. I'm all for wheels having size, I'm all for people having a choice as to which size of wheel, frame, tire, saddle, handlebar, etc... Choice is good, as long as you make it for yourself and it is an educated choice based on knowledge, not on the Crazy Uncle whispering dirty jokes into your ear. Size does matter. You have to be the Goldilocks of wheels when it comes down to "what size?" is right for you. What works for me will not always work for you, and what works for you will not always work for me. This bed is too soft.

I've got a whole musette bag full of opinions, but I also have ears, and I listen. I like to think of myself as a Student of Cycling. I don't know everything, but I am learning, as should everyone. Sometimes one should shut their mouth and open ones ears so that one can hear and possibly learn. An open mind will expand knowledge better than one that is closed. More to come... I hope.

Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-1908361155556132352013-11-14T19:30:00.000-06:002013-11-14T19:30:01.697-06:00Don't call it a comebackFor those of you who know me and for those that don't, I am a huge fan of the Cyclocross. Love that stuff. It is so much fun to watch. It is fast, and the PRO Elite fields only race for 60min. Full gas. Mud. Sand. Grass. Ice and snow and rain, wind, whatever, you name it they race in it. How can you not love 'cross? This brings me to the point where I actually race 'cross, or I at least enter, pay my money and line up for a race. If you see how fast I go, I would not call it racing. More like surviving. Racing 'cross is like a dare you make with your own body. "I dare you to go as hard as you can without puking." "oh yeah, try me." Why would anyone want to do this? 'Cause it's FUN. Right? Sure.

NO, it hurts like heck. But. We do it anyway.

I have not raced all season, so I decided to race a three day race this last weekend. I am a shell of a human, after. Not being in race-shape and then racing three days in a row is incredibly intelligent. "Race yourself into shape" -add that to the long list of Cyclist Lies. This is the most painful way to gain fitness, maybe. Three days down in the books and I'm shelled, beat, cracked, broken. So, I should enter a 50 mile MTB race. Great idea.

So there is that. I'm headed to Texas to hang out with the family and destroy my body one pedalstroke at a time. To paraphrase Tyler Durden, "we are dying one second at a time" it's how you spend those seconds that matter. I should spend close to 18,000 seconds of my life dying, riding in what I consider one of the most beautiful places (Palo Duro Canyon). What are you going to do for five hours on Saturday? Maybe, just maybe I'll let you know how this goes...

Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-7891893788086697072013-07-26T09:24:00.001-05:002013-07-26T09:24:16.755-05:00Changing seasons not underwearIt's not even August yet, and I'm already thinking about Fall. This is like living in Utah dreaming of the snows to come when it is ninety degrees out. I'm getting that dirt frame of mind, I've been riding the CX bike a lot and threw a leg over the MTB for the first time in... forever. Just when I'm getting into the swing of things, mother nature throws a wind storm party and there are all these drunk fallen-over trees in my way. You know some of the trees on the trail are like barriers, dismount-jump-remount. Shouldering a 30lb full-suspension doesn't have the same appeal or is as nimble as it's off road cousin.

Le Tour is over and it was the most entertaining boring thing I've ever watched. It was similar to watching a movie that you know the ending to, but think that watching it this time it will change. No such luck. I was really enjoying the race until Froome put a strangle hold on yellow. Boring. Yes, he lost like a min when crosswinds shredded the field, but he took it back and more. Sagan locked up the Green with his points grabbing scheme. Don't feel he is the best sprinter, he is a Classics machine. He can get over the bigger bumps that the other pure sprinters die on, but in a heads up full gas sprint he is good, just not Cavo good. Kittel, boom! This guy is for real. Impressive wins all 4 of them. Argos, in just three years has produced a Pro ProTour team. Impressed. Quintana was a breath of fresh air, slightly greedy with the jerseys. Hey pal just take one and move on. Oh, you want the White one and the Polka dots? Greedy, should have taken the Yellow while you were at it...

Enough of le Tour for now. Utah is coming up. Get the App and watch the stages on your mobile. It will be the hardest stage race in 'merica. After that we have the Tour of Colora... I mean US Pro Tour Challenge or something like that. It's Colorado. It's in one State, call it what it is. Coors needs to step up and sponsor this thing... Wait a min, we could call it the Coors Classic. Nope, just having a flashback. Sorry. Maybe Red Zinger? Hell of the West?

The days are getting shorter, you probably have not noticed yet, but they are. This means the changing of the seasons and I know you are expecting me to say CycloCross, but not yet. We still have La Vuelta and the Fall Classics, and don't forget Worlds. Lots and lots of racing left on our plates. There is CrossVegas middle of September in Vegas and the World Champ will be there. (as will I, just not in a professional manner)

More coffee por favor, my body hurts, but I want to ride. Gonna ride down to the local Starbucks and see if I can get them to mainline me some espresso. I hate needles, maybe should drink it. Just French press it into my mouth. (that sounds dirty) Sorry trying to keep it PG-13
Rode the MTB up to Turkey for a little single track goodness that turned foul very quickly. Somehow I forgot about the carnage that occurred just a night ago. Four hundred thousand mph winds knocked about and left several trees and debris all over the place. {Hey, what happened to the term "gust-nado"? Is it dead? I thought it was the stupidest meteorological term ever. Glad I have not heard it uttered.} This was pretty evident when I turned

0nto the Red trail and and everything sounded "crunchy". Branches and tree litter everywhere, and it's a shame because the trails are in perfect condition in spite of being laid to waste.

So it wasn't too bad climbing up to the top, the soil perfectly tacky and firm. No slipping, no sliding. Hooked up. I pointed the rig towards Bunny and let it out, after a few super nice turns I had a handful of brakes. Stopped for a tree crossing. Well, they don't really cross, they just stay there in your way. No matter how long you wait. I didn't wait long and shouldered the bike and traversed the tree with the elegance of a drunken monkey. Few more turns down and a few more trees in the same condition. So much for getting my flow on. Ride, get off, climb tree, ride, stop, turn around, ride, stop, pull out branches from rear derailleur. There's your flow.

That last branch must of bent something up pretty good, cause my drivetrain sounds like a broken hamster wheel in a grade school classroom. Minus the smell. Another lap of turns and tree hopping and it's back to the shop to put things back where they belong either all nice like or with a hammer. I can't complain, well I am just a little. Not bad for a day off, it could always be worse. At least the bread landed "butter side up", right? I got outside on the mtb and rode, it wasn't the postcard home kinda ride, but it was a ride.

I'm on the couch convalescing with some Dinosaur Jr in the background, legs up, and a pint of Ben & Jerry's Phish food. Oh, I hate it when people say "life is good" "life is good" blah blah blah, but Life is Good. And it's almost beer thirty, or is it... Pssshhhhhsssss! Yep. Ahhhhhh!Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-26347281938408209082013-06-30T22:54:00.000-05:002013-06-30T22:54:38.572-05:00le Tour feverI should be mad at work pouring sweat over the keyboard, punching out blog after blog after blog. But. I'm not. Holy crap everyone is going crazy over le Tour, as if there has not been any racing going on since February. Yes, it is big, and if it is the only cycling racing that you know, then that is fine, but it is not the only be all end all. I am thankful for all the coverage and I love the hype. I love the fact that we can turn on a TV and have a live feed from across the pond, or type a few keys, slide some fingertips and voila... Magic. No more waiting for a racing periodical to read and relive the past.

Just a little recap of the first stage. "Your bus is too big"-French accent "Your banner is too short"-Aussie accent "The finish will be at 3km to go"-race radio "The finish will be at the Finish"-race radio Crash, Crash, Crash, Fast, Fast, Crash, Sprint, Win, Yellow, Roadrash. That was hard to watch, not saying it was not entertaining, 'cause it was. Not the crashing part -I hate that. I can feel the pavement, hear the carbon grinding, and the smell. I hate watching crashes, and if you like it, you are a sick individual. Stop being sick.

Stage two was great. Attack! Breakaway! Catch! Climb! Sprinters off the back! Counter! Attack! Gap! Catch-not so fast! With just what was it, a second? One second to spare, the solo (if you can call it that) fought to stay alive and hold off the surging peloton. Oh yeah, it looks like they have the same problem in France with stupid dog owners... Keep your dog on a leash you freaking idiots. Seriously, dogs are super cool and are generally smarter than we are, but they do dog things and we get in their way sometimes. So, for the sake of your dog's safety, keep them on a leash or in a fenced yard. [getting off soapbox and exiting stage right] I love a good hard fought stage and today was a great example of what that looks like.

I hope for more days like today to keep this 100th edition of le Tour exciting. I'm not promising anything, but hope to punish these keys a little more in the next few days. It's been awhile and my skills are pretty bad. Good night.Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-39440627735638881042013-04-08T14:01:00.001-05:002013-04-08T14:01:25.330-05:00Rubaix cubeOk, so Fabian did the Ronde - Rubaix two step, and in the process hoisted the cobble for the third time. Now we can all get caught up in the hoopla that Mr. Swiss Miss has poured out, or we can look at what really happened in the Queen of the Classics.

Biggest losers on the day are Omega Pharma (OPQS), yes they did get the last step on the podium with Terpstra. Don't get me wrong I don't want to take away from what Niki did, he rode an excellent race and had the best luck of the whole OPQS squad, and most likely would have been higher up if he had not been playing the teammate in the chase groups that he found himself. First off, how about Stybar? Where did this guy come from? CX, that's where. That is where just three years ago he was running all over Belgium wearing the Rainbow jersey of the World Champ, and then Quick Step snatched him up and put him on the road. Someone knew what they were doing when they drew up that contract. Zednek rode hard for the team and then clawed his way on to the charging Spartacus until a hapless collision with a spectator sent him to the showers in a solid 6th place. Not bad, I would like to use the word Awesome. Vandenbergh!!!! Ah, he was en fuego! I thought he was going to run away with it and make the Belgians proud, but a twist of fate or should I say handlebars -caused by a spectator sent his cobble hoisting dreams into a dusty, dirty, and bloody nightmare of First to chase to a 20th place. Heartbreak. Lady luck is a B!&(#.

One word... Chavanel. My favorite and my pick, looked to be in the cat-bird seat all day. Team all around doing work controlling the race and just being in the right place at the right time. Perfect day to be on the Northern French roads for the Frenchman and I'm sure he could taste the Champagne, right up until he felt his rear tire go soft at the worst possible time. Dream over, damage control, time to chase for scraps. Gert, the workhorse that he is did his job to get the team where they were and he made it look easy, and even with burning himself up for the team, finished the race smack in the middle at a respectable 55th -for a super diesel engine worker only 6mins off the leader. Love Steegmans.

Oh and I guess I should mention my boys at Lotto Belisol, well they had worse luck than OPQS, 24th was the highest they could manage with Sieberg. Shame, their team is a Classics wrecking ball, instead of being the ball they have been getting smashed by it lately. They still have L-B-L and Amstel...

Biggest winners of the day, not named Fabian. Have to tip the cap to Sep. In the shadows on Garmin, gets a transfer to Rabobank (now Blanco), and then the second step in the Roubaix Velodrome. I am so happy to see a great young talent, such as Vanmarcke get the chance to showcase his ability. Smart move Blanco. You also have to hand it to Sep for his guts to trade pulls with the strongest cyclist on the planet. He could have easily set on Fabian's wheel all the way to the finish, but he chose to roll the dice and extend their gap. I can't say that is was the wrong move, all I can say is that I have so much respect for that kind of move. Stand up, classy move. More people should take note.

Another note worthy talent that is way overshadowed by big names on his BMC team is Greg. Van Avermaet is always on my shortlist for Darkhorse Winner in big Classics races where his teammates are going to suck. Just off of the podium and well off the radar. Greg needs to be on a team that will use his talent in the way it should be... put a freaking #1 on his back and work your asses off for him, or not. What do I know? Oh yeah same boat, as in the HMS OVERLOOKED, Bernie Eisel. I'm talking to you Sky. Bernie is a superstar, a superstar domistique, but more importantly he can destroy Classics races. Unyoke this legbreaker and work for him, or transfer him to a team that will give him carte blanche.

I would be remiss to not mention JAF. Juan Antonio Flecha. The Spanish have a special hatred for the cobbled classics, but few thrive. (just look at the DNFs) Juan rode with such panache, I would say that that guy was switched at birth and should have been from the Low Countries. If you make a fantasy Classics team, never never never overlook JAF, he will deliver.

Ok, so what is up with Europcar? These guys are starting to look legit. Stop Laughing, I'm being serious. Gaudin is for real, and Turgot is impressive. It is almost like these guys are taking a page out of Voeckler's book. They are riding with the vigor of Thomas' reckless abandon, and they are getting results. Is this the first "real" French team to become a contender? I've got my eye on those green and black jerseys aboard their Colnagos. Oh yeah and most of Europcar rode CX bikes, just a little tech bit for you.Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-30972859590322753692013-04-03T13:00:00.000-05:002013-04-03T13:00:01.472-05:00It's ClassicalIf a blog gets posted and no one reads it, did a tree fall in the forest? Or is it something about a bear. Maybe a Priest and a Rabbi. Whatever? Yeah I'm back, sure... you've heard that one before. No really, I'm not promising anything. But, on the other hand get ready to comment, send hatemail, and call your congressman.

I am not a fan of Fabian. I don't hate the guy, I'm not going to say that he is doping or using motors in his bike. I just do not like the guy, and I have nothing to back up my feelings as to why I don't like him. So there. I like Swiss Miss, love Toblerone, and the cheese with the holes is great. Fabian no.

And now for something completely different. I am going to try to be racist, sexist, and crude in the next sentence. Did you see that Cech dude grab that chicks ass? If Peter Sagan was half as good a bike rider as he is at playing grab-ass he'd be... Guess the UCI and Pat didn't tell Peter that the grab-ass only goes on behind closed doors and after money has exchanged accounts in an off-shore bank. Silly Peter he is so young. I love this kid. He is funny. One hell of a bike rider. He can ride wheelies. His powerslides make hipster-fixie-riders bow with envy. I don't know who put him up to the FB video apology, but he looked like a hostage. Shame on you. Where is Ted King when you need him? Ted, put your boy on a leash and keep the wolves away from him. If I can't have Tom standing on the podium, let it be Peter. (and not Fabian)

As much as I love to Boonen on the top step, I have to say that I love when a guy like Gerald Ciolek comes from out of the ashes and wins a monument like Milan -San Remo. Ciolek has been in the shadow of Zabel, Steegmans, Boonen, and Cavendish. Looks like he might have learned a thing or two while being "just" a lead-out man. Takes balls to go to a non-ProTour team to get what you want. And that is why I like the Darkhorse. I love the back story.

Paris -Roubaix is right around the corner, and I would kill to see Sylvain Chavanel solo into the velodrome. Chavanel fresh off of his overall at de Panne is my favorite. He has to be the most overlooked rider in the peloton. He could lead any French team of his choice, yet he faithfully rides year after year for Patrick Lefevere under the banner of Belgium. Please Please Please let Chavanel have his due. Give him the number 1 on his back, and ride for him. The last thing I want to see is a healthy Chavanel playing nurse-maid to an injured Boonen. Chavanel on home soil hoisting the Pave. Dream come true.
Suck at this whole blog thing. Sorry about that, my faithful reader/s (Mike). Guess you haven't had any reading material on the throne. Anyway, I used to be able to just tap tap tap at the keys and put out some sort of time filling garbage that made me feel good about myself or at least make you crack a smile. Holy Crap a lot has happened to me in the last year or so, and with the magic of storytelling I'm going to start at the present and work my way back, well at least back to a few days ago.

In a land not too far away, in a country where everything is bigger, there was a young boy... wait, too far back. So, this last weekend I drove down to see the parents for Easter and to get some riding in on those choice Texas roads. The weather was perfect. When I say perfect I mean Perfect, not Panhandle perfect where the wind is only 20mph, I mean the flags needed Viagra it was so windless. Perfect. This never happens. Seriously check the history books, talk to a groundhog, do what you gotta do, but it is always windy. Well, except for this last weekend. I could not even fly my kite for the Easter tradition -heartbroken... sorry Grandma. It put a whole new perspective on the cycling in the Panhandle for me. Amazing is a pretty strong word. Beautiful roads, equally beautiful weather, and the stark emptiness of the land made for a religious experience.

I would, and will have to say that getting to share it with my parents was as they say "Priceless". Days like that don't come around very often. With that being said. When you ride in harsh, or less than perfect conditions all the time (like in the Panhandle) it makes the good days that much better. I guess what I am trying to say is... is. Make sure that when you get that "perfect day" you hold on to it and you appreciate it for all that it is worth.

It's short, don't know if it is sweet, but that's what I've got and that is what you are going to get. I miss writing like this and hope to be able to get back into a good rhythm. This is my favorite time of the year, it's the Spring Classics, and de Ronde was just two days ago. I've got lots to say, just having trouble getting it out into the magical 1's and zeros. Stay tuned you never know if I will write again. Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-20451524818976916192013-01-01T12:20:00.000-06:002013-01-01T12:20:03.119-06:00Day one of 365 in 2013So I'm starting of the New Year right, I'm trying to produce a metric ton of snot. Yeah you heard me right, sounds funny, but it's snot. I have been fighting a sinus infection for about a week and a half. Two doctors visits, two prescriptions, a shot in the arse and I still feel not so bueno. Enough about me. Seriously, how much mucus can your body produce? This is crazy, in the last couple of weeks I'm sure I have pound for pound equaled my body weight. At least once or twice. So, it can only get better from here, Right? That's right... Positive.

I am not making any resolutions or changes for this coming year. I'm just going to take it as it comes, and make the best of it. That being said, I would like to be a little more consistent with things (writing). Don't want to jinx things, just trying to get off on the right foot.

I haven't been on the bike much, one because of the weather and two because of being under said weather. I really want to ride the MTB more this year, and I want to do it in other states. I want to use my car even less this year. Wow, this really sounds like resolutions. Na, it's not, just being hopeful for the New Year.

Well so stay tuned, and see where this goes... I could possibly talk about cycling, life, funny stuff, gossip, dirty laundry, jokes, secrets, history, chemistry, algebra -I'm not so good at math. Anyway keep tuned in and we will see if I can stay on a roll and continue making letters into words and stuff.

See you out there on the trail, road, and in the shop.Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472592707943776985.post-59404172422385710122012-12-31T15:29:00.000-06:002012-12-31T15:29:05.258-06:00LiesHow many people are going to tell lies tonight. Lies to themselves. Here is a PSA for all of you who are planning to LIE. Don't do it. I know it sounds so simple to just not lie, but it is not... It is a night of lies. For exhibit A: I'm going to _______ next year. That is the biggest lie that will be told tonight, it is usually made under good intentions, but mostly made under social/peer/traditional pressure.

1. be true to yourself and don't say something that you are not

2. shoot low, I know this sounds wrong, but seriously... lower your expectations

3. don't change anything, slightly modify something... stop smoking crack -switch to cigarettes

The worst thing you can do to yourself is to lie... it's ok to lie to your friends and family, but don't lie to yourself. Someone said that "change is the only permanent thing in life" this is truth. You can resist change you can try to change, or do nothing. It will happen no matter what forces you apply. So you might as well pull up a chair pour a nice beverage and sit back and enjoy the show.

I had a weird year last year. Some of it was really good, some not so good, but none of it was a product of me trying to resolve to do something different. I did not change my life on 12/31/11, it changed in the subsequent 365 days, no matter the influences I practiced. So on this eve of the New Year I wonder what the next days have in store for me. I will resolve to not be resolute in this newest of years, 'cause time will continue no matter the piles and piles of lies that are spoken tonight.

One last final suggestion if you decide to not follow my anti-resolution stance. Drink so much that you forget anything and everything that you resolved to do... world peace, stop drinking, stop smoking, getting a real life, stealing cable, pirating movies, stealing lunch money, other bad things.

No really, have fun, be safe, live to fight another day... year or two. Glenn Duhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14953545894553730260noreply@blogger.com0
